Without Tannehill, Landy’s Value will Rise

Dolphins fans and fantasy players alike are panicking as uncertainty builds around Tannehill’s knee injury. Although it appears there’s tears it seems safe to say that the Dolphins coaching staff seems concerned he will miss part of, if not all of the 2017 season. If Tannehill does end up missing time, it could actually help Jarvis Landry’s stock.

Landry has been one of the most discussed WRs this off season for fantasy players. He’s the WR1 in Miami and was targeted at least 8 times in half of his games last season. He racked up a total of 1136 receiving yards, but to the disdain of his owners: he only pulled in 4 TDs. He’s currently the 16th WR taken off the board, on average, with an ADP of 37. His stock has already started to drop as fantasy owners refuse to take the risk without Tannehill.

This is a mistake. When Tannehill missed weeks 15-17 with a similar knee injury last season, Landry shined. Matt Moore, the heir to the QB1 crown, targeted Landry 22 times in those three games. Landry used that attention to reel in 15 receptions (68% of targets) for 213 yards and 2 TDs. That’s 50% of the TDs he had all season, in 3 weeks, without Tannehill. If Moore is the starter, then this is a perfect storm for Landry’s value. His ADP will continue to plummet but his productivity is likely to rise. He could be the steal of the draft.

We must also consider the very real possibility that Moore isn’t the starter in Miami this season, even if Tannehill does miss time. When asked, Coach Gase offed only that “right now, Matt is our quarterback. We’ll see where we go from there”. Another option for Gase is a awkward and unnecessary reunion with Jay Cutler. If the Dolphins do go down that route it’ll mean two things: first, that they truly do enjoy being mediocre and second, that you shouldn’t touch Landry or Cutler with a ten foot pole. The other, more reasonable option is that Kaepernick finally finds a landing spot. If Kaepernick is the choice for Miami then Landry’s stock goes up. Kaep had 6 games last season where he threw for over 200 yards, and 5 games with multiple TD passes. I don’t love him as your fantasy QB, but I think he can help your fantasy WR.

Fantasy football is all about value, and in this case Tannehill’s injury could provide some serious value to Jarvis Landry. If you see Landry still on the board past the 3rd round, go for him.
