Hot or Hot Garbage Week 7: Players Affected by Injuries to their Teammates

Matt Hicks, Staff Writer

It’s Thursday which means it’s…Hot Garbage Day! If you’re new to Thursdays with T2, every week we go through players we think are “Hot” and which players we think are “Hot Garbage”. This week I’m focusing on players that have been affected by injuries to their teammates. I wrote about how to manage your fantasy team with major injuries manage your fantasy team with major injuries yesterday, but today I’ll focus on the players left on the field.

Jordy Nelson: Hot

I know Jordy’s production will go down with Rodgers out, but let’s stop pretending like he’s going to be completely useless. He’s scored 20+ fantasy points three times this season (in PPR) and is enough of a possession receiver to produce with Hundley. He’s still a solid WR2. Don’t sell him low.

Jerrick McKinnon: Hot Garbage

I’m just not buying that McKinnon is suddenly a good RB. Chicago and Green Bay aren’t tough defenses and I think it’s inflating his value. McKinnon will be a solid 8-12 points a week guy moving forward but he’s not putting up 20 points a week. If you have him, trade him before he plays Baltimore this weekend and his value comes back to reality.

Demaryius Thomas: Smoking Hot

Thomas has silently been great all season. He has at least 5 carries and 65 yards in all but one start this season and has scored double digit fantasy points 4 times. We already saw him get a bump with Sanders out; he had 10 receptions this week. Expect that to continue moving forward, he’s about to breakout.

Sterling Shepard: Not Too Hot

I’m pumping the brakes on Shepard. He’s gotten a TON of hype this week now that he’s the only Giants WR people have actually heard of. Let’s not forget, he’s coming back from injury himself. He has more than 5 receptions in just two games this season and he’s going to be dealing with the top corners in the league for the rest of the season, which isn’t something he’s used to. He’s got Seattle this weekend, which drops his value even more. He’s a decent flex option but let’s not get too hype on him just yet.

George Kittle: About to Explode

It’s not an injury, but its close enough: I wrote earlier this week about how much I believe in C.J. Beathard. how much I believe in C.J. Beathard. That love extends to George Kittle, who has already been solid this season. He’s been averaging 11 points a week in PPR for the last three weeks; which is relatively fantastic given the low TE production this season. A rookie QB is bound to rely on his TE, and Beathard has already proved he can move the ball into the red zone against tough defenses.

Buccaneers Wide Receivers: Hot

Ryan Fitzpatrick came in and starting slinging the ball around the field like a loose cannon. Get it, cannon? They’re the Bucs, they shoot a cannon when…forget it. It looks like Winston may be back this week, but even if he isn’t Fitzpatrick threw the ball for 290 yards and 3 TDs; that’s some serious fantasy value right there. Don’t back off Evans or Jackson. Also don’t even think about backing off Cameron Brate. They’ll be arrrl-right, okay I’m done.
