Week 1 Start/Sit: Quarterbacks & Wide Receivers

Rejoice NFL fans the season is finally here! With the start of the season comes the annual ritual of trying to decide who to start and who to sit in fantasy football. I will be providing your weekly start ’em or sit ’em advice for Quarterbacks and Wide Receivers. With that, no need to beat around the bush. Let’s get this show on the road!

Disclaimer: You will never find names like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers in this article. If you drafted them then you don’t need to think twice about starting them. The purpose of this article is to uncover weekly gems and strong plays.

Quarterbacks: Start ‘Em

Bengals QB Andy Dalton @ Indy

I know you’re rolling your eyes right now. I get that the red rifle is not a glamorous pick to start at QB but he’s playing the Colts. I have nothing nice to say about anyone on the Colts defense outside of Malik Hooker and possibly rookie linebacker Darius Leonard. Dalton has a sneaky good assortment of weapons at WR, RB and TE. He has an upgraded O-Line and he should have all day to throw. He’s a QB1 this week against a putrid Indy defense.

Rams QB Jared Goff @ Oakland

You know what Jared Goff loves to see? Khalil Mack leaving Oakland for Chicago. The Raiders are starting the season in flux. Meanwhile, the Rams have loaded up on both sides of the ball and this should be a coming out party for the LA super team. I expect Goff to have a huge game against a bad Oakland secondary.

Quarterbacks: Sit ‘em

Raiders QB Derek Carr VS LA Rams

Yikes. This is not the team you want to see week one. Good luck against that Rams defensive line Mr. Carr. If you happen to get the ball off before Suh and Donald eat you, make sure you can squeeze the ball into the tightest of windows because Talib and Peters will be lurking. Not the week to start the Raiders signal caller.

Giants QB Eli Manning VS Jacksonville

Eli has a great assortment of weapons this season. Young tight end Evan Engram is a stud, OBJ is back and Sterling Shepard enters his 3rd season. Eli even has shiny new stud RB Saquon Barkley with him in the backfield. That’s all well and dandy, but these are the Jacksonville Jaguars we’re talking about here. The best defense in football is a title currently owned by these Jaguars and their pass rush can wreck games. I’m not trusting Eli this week. Big test for the Giants O-Line and I don’t think they pass it.

Wide Receiver: Start ‘Em

Chargers WR Mike Williams

I know the return of Gates may take some red-zone targets away from Williams, but I think the 2nd year WR is ready to break out. Last year was more of a red shirt season and I expect him to be unleashed. Marcus Peters is no longer in Kansas City and Eric Berry might not play. The Chiefs defense looks primed to take a major step back. Mike Williams emerges on to the scene with a big game in week 1.

Browns WR Jarvis landry

I know this isn’t exactly a bold proclamation and if you have him then you’re starting him but I wanted to make a point here. Jarvis Landry is about to make not only his Browns debut, but also his AFC North debut. Jarvis Landry is THE PERFECT AFC NORTH RECEIVER. This guy is tough as nails and he’s going to be going a million miles an hour against the team that has ruled the division for years now. I expect Landry to make his presence felt come Sunday.

Wide Receiver: Sit ‘em

Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin

I understand why some in the community try to make an argument for Benjamin. Only NFL worthy WR in Buffalo, big red-zone target and he’ll have plenty of opportunities. With all of that said, this is NOT the week to roll the dice. I expect Baltimore to clamp down on the Bills. Peterman will be running for his life. Benjamin will have to get open quickly which is something he does not do well.

49ers WR Marquise Goodwin/Pierre Garcon

I’m higher than most on the 49ers offense. After wishing they had gone out and got some better weapons for Jimmy G, I came to the conclusion that he actually has a pretty decent cast around him already. Garcon is a very good possession receiver and Goodwin has shown a very strong rapport with Garoppolo. With all of those good things said, they’re playing the Vikings who have arguably the best defense in the league. I would avoid all 49ers players this weekend.
