Sony Michel had a solid rookie season and it was actually better than his statistics indicate. He was battling an injury coming into the season so his first game played he was in a limited role and when the Patriots played Chicago he only had 4 carries before exiting with an injury.
Even in this limited role he totaled 132.1 fantasy points and finished as the 25th RB. Michel really showed he could be relied on once the playoffs started, being a featured part of the Patriots’ offense he averaged 112 yards rushing per game and scored 6 TDs.
The biggest change people are going to point to from the Patriots’ offseason is the drafting of Damien Harris, but this is a team that has always used multiple running backs. The drafting of Harris is more of an indictment of Rex Burkhead and his inability to stay of the field. The change that really matters the most for Michel’s fantasy value is the expected return of Isaiah Wynn, their other 1st Round draft pick from 2018. He will join and offensive line that was ranked 4th int he league after week 17 according to ProFootballFocus.com’s offensive line power rankings.
I admit I am higher on Michel than the consensus and also the highest among the Fanalysts rankers; here is why:
Michel is in a great situation for 2019, playing behind a great offensive line and he will be in positive game scripts in the majority of games. The 2019 Patriot offense is going to revolve around protecting Tom Brady with a successful rushing attack and short passing game. One of the biggest criticisms leveled against Michel is his lack of involvement in the passing game. With James White on the team he is not going to suddenly become a large part of the passing game, but his reception total can only go up in 2019.
Ultimately, in fantasy football the TD is still king. I would be shocked if Michel finished the season with less than 10 TDs and 1,000 rushing yards. Here are the names that have run for double digit TDs for the Pariots since 2001: LeGarrette Blount, BenJarvus Green-Ellis twice, Corey Dillon three times, Steven Ridley and Antowain Smith. With the exception of Dillon there is no doubt that Michel is more talented than all of those players.
Many will worry about the stigma of the Patriots’ running back rotation, but Michel is a player they have invested in and used heavily in the most important situations once it was playoff time. In 2019 only 6 players had double digit rushing TDs, currently Michel is going in the 4th round and at that value he will be on a lot of my rosters this year.
